Dominating the Iroise Cup, the second event of the M34 season, Franck Cammas and his crew have lived up to the potential they demonstrated during the Spi Ouest France. With just one event to go until the Tour de France à la Voile, the hierarchy has been confirmed, with Courrier Dunkerque and Sodebo completing the podium, whilst other crews have made considerable progress, including the Omani team.
For want of the chance to sail in the spring sunshine, Groupama 34 still managed to find the road to victory. Leading the race from the first day, the Lorient-based team have demonstrated fantastic consistency, always finishing in the top three, with the exception of the coastal course from Douarnenez, where they finished in a rather unfortunate last place: "The Iroise Cup was fairly similar to the Tour de France à la Voile in part. As such we sought to put into practice the game plan we'll have this summer, as well as trying to sail cleanly, without taking too many risks. Indeed, as will be the case on the Tour, every race counts towards the overall ranking".
Though the state of the leaderboard testifies to the uniformity of the fleet, careful scrutiny of the ranking for each of the fifteen races contested speaks volumes: six of the eight competitors have won at least one race. With five victories, Courrier Dunkerque had the greatest number of wins to its credit, ahead of Groupama 34 (3 victories), Sodebo (2 victories), Oman, Ile de France and Crédit Mutuel (1 victory).
In constant contact with Courrier Dunkerque, Franck Cammas was pretty happy with the result: "We sailed better than we did in the Spi Ouest France, especially in the breezy conditions, where we have good speed. We still need to make progress in the medium to light winds, especially downwind".
With regard the atmosphere, the crew of Groupama 34 is a pleasure to behold. The arrival of a few young sailors, such as Matthieu di Russo, Louis Viat and Malo Bessec, has really relieved the tension of the post-race debriefings and the meals eaten together every evening since the start of racing.
All that's left now is to lift Groupama 34 out onto the hard. She's heading back to her base in Lorient on Monday to undergo a general check-up prior to heading to Le Havre in early June for Normandy Sailing Week.

En s'imposant dans l'Iroise Cup, deuxième épreuve de la saison en M34, Franck Cammas et son équipage ont confirmé les espoirs entrevus lors du Spi Ouest France. Alors qu'il ne reste plus qu'une épreuve à disputer avant le Tour de France à la Voile, la hiérarchie se confirme avec Courrier Dunkerque et Sodebo qui complètent le podium quand d'autres progressent nettement, à l'instar de l'équipe d'Oman.
A défaut de naviguer sous un soleil printanier, Groupama 34 a trouvé le chemin de la victoire. En tête de la course depuis le premier jour, les lorientais ont fait preuve d'une très grande régularité, terminant toujours dans les trois premiers, à l'exception du parcours côtier de Douarnenez qu'ils terminent à une peu chanceuse dernière place : « L'Iroise Cup était par certains aspects assez semblable au Tour de France à la Voile. Nous avons donc cherché à mettre en pratique l'organisation que nous aurons cet été mais aussi à naviguer proprement, sans prendre trop de risques. Car, ici comme sur le Tour, on ne retire aucune manche pour le classement général ».
S'il fallait démontrer l'homogénéité de la flotte, l'analyse attentive du classement de chacune des quinze manches disputées est éloquente : six des huit concurrents ont remporté au moins une manche. Avec cinq victoires, Courrier Dunkerque mène devant Groupama 34 (3 victoires), Sodebo (2 victoires), Oman, Ile de France et Crédit Mutuel (1 victoire).
Au contact permanent de Courrier Dunkerque, Franck Cammas était assez satisfait de ce résultat : « Nous avons été meilleurs qu'au Spi Ouest France. Notamment dans la brise où nous sommes rapides. On doit encore progresser dans le médium léger notamment au portant ».
Coté ambiance, l'équipage de Groupama 34 fait plaisir à voir. L'arrivée de quelques jeunes comme Matthieu di Russo, Louis Viat ou Malo Bessec détendent sérieusement les post débriefing et autres repas pris ensemble chaque soir depuis le début des courses.
Reste maintenant à gruter Groupama 34 qui reviendra lundi à sa base de Lorient pour subir un check up général avant de rejoindre Le Havre début juin pour la Normandie Sailing Week.
