52 Super Series : Azzurra Starts with two commanding victories

Two bullets and a third place put Azzurra on the leadership of the 52 Super Series after the first day of racing at the 40° Trofeo Conde de Godó in Barcelona, first event of the European series of the prestigious TP52 circuit.

Azzurra, holder of the 2012 championship title, started the 52 Super Series 2013 in the Mediterranean in exactly the same fashion it ended the US 52 Super Series 2013 on the waters of Florida: victorious. Two perfect starts at the pin end in the first and third race, led to two victories after having always sailed in command, tacking and gybing in phase with the wind shifts, without missing a single maneuver.

The second race proved a bit tougher and Alberto Roemmers' boat had to fight tooth and nail: from a start on the far right-hand side, the guys were able to stay in the leading pack of the fleet, brilliantly recovering from a small technical glitch during a gennaker drop. The last run was spectacular, marked by the great gybing duel with Ran, in which Azzurra prevailed right on the finish line. Azzurra is leading with an advantage of one point over Quantum and four over Ran, the closest adversaries, all 52 Super Series competitors have the potential to take a victory.

Racing today took place under the Garbí breeze, a southwesterly thermal breeze that started gently at 10 knots and reached gusts of over 20 knots during the third race. Tomorrow's races in front of Barcelona will again start at noon. It is possible to follow them live on Azzurra's Facebook and Twitter pages as well as on www.azzurra.it and www.52superseries.com thanks to Virtual Eye with English commentary.

Quotes of the day

Guillermo Parada, skipper: “It was a beautiful day to sail. Vasco did a very good job on a race course that is so difficult to decipher. He took many decisions and showed great personality, demonstrating again he is a top-class sailor. The entire crew carried out their job and the maneuvers very well. We are happy but that doesn't mean anything yet because we are leading by just one point. However, starting on the right foot is always encouraging. We are happy with the boat; the new sails are performing as expected. Everything is fine, we are calm and this was a nice day. We have changed all our sails and we are constantly working on further development. We took the decision to race in the US season with the minimum number of new sails allowed and keep all the new sails for the European season. Unfortunately, we suffered a bit in Miami but our plan was to hold on as much as we could in the US so that to be sure we were in good shape in Europe because a new sail inventory always brings a bit more speed. Again, we are happy but we have a very long way ahead of us.”

Vasco Vascotto, tactician: “We started on the right foot and that's what counts. We sailed well and we also showed our ability to recover from difficult situations. We are in the lead but it certainly was challenging. The point we recovered in the second race is very important: these are the tests of character, mentally and physically, that give us strength and make us understand that we will be able to better address even the difficult days, intrinsic part of competitive sports, which sooner or later will come."
