Iroise Cup : Another victory for Groupama 34

Today saw the thirteenth race in the Iroise Cup. Fortunately, the number didn't offend Groupama 34, winner of the offshore race from Camaret to Lanvéoc, where the Grand Prix de l'Ecole Navale has been underway since yesterday. With an 8-point lead over its direct rival, Courrier Dunkerque, Franck Cammas' crew is in a very good position with only two races left to run at best.

"This time, we didn't let first place out of our sights. That's a very pleasant sensation," says Erwan Israël, navigator aboard Groupama 34.

With the craggy face of a sailor, who has sailed everyday for the past eight days, his brows encrusted with crystals of salt, the former Laser sailor and winner of the Volvo Ocean Race looks like a happy man: "We swallowed up the narrows of Brest at an average of over 15 knots. It was fantastic to see the coast flying past at that speed. When we made Le Moulin Blanc mark, we had to be on our guard as the tide was low and there wasn't a lot of water below the keel."

It would have taken more than that to unsettle this sailor, who has tacked about the harbour countless times on his Laser. However, despite putting in some serious training over the winter, the crew of Groupama 34 are still committing a few errors: "At the start of the run under spinnaker, we broached twice".

Significantly though, Courrier Dunkerque remained under their control. Behind, Sodebo was overtaken by Oman in the final metres of racing, managing to trawl the masthead spinnaker to boot...

Quickly heading to their hotel, the crew will enjoy a short nap so as to be in good shape for the final day of racing tomorrow: "We should have a bit less wind than today. It's down to us to have at least one good race to make sure we can keep Courrier Dunkerque at bay, as a comeback by them is still on the cards. We're in front but they're not far behind..." concludes the navigator.

Provisional ranking for the Iroise Cup after thirteen races:
1/ Groupama 34 with 34 points
2/ Courrier Dunkerque with 42 points
3/ Sodebo with 56 points
4/ Team Oman Sail with 59 points
5/ Ile de France
6/ Nantes St Nazaire
7/ Bretagne Crédit Mutuel
8/ Ville de Genève - Carrefour Prévention

6/ Nantes St Nazaire
7/ Bretagne Crédit Mutuel
8/ Ville de Genève - Carrefour Prévention
