Iroise Cup : Leg Victory and top of the leaderboard for Groupama 34

It was a favourable day for Groupama 34, who secured a win in the leg from Douarnenez to Camaret and, in so doing, snatched back the lead in the overall ranking with a just a one-point lead over Courrier Dunkerque.

Decidedly the battle between the Bretons and the team from northern France is not lacking intensity. Leaders on the first day before being caught by Daniel Souben's team, Cammas and his men were keen to win this offshore race after their less than successful coastal course on Saturday, which saw them take last place despite leading the way for a considerable time.

"We set off in light airs. On some direct tacks as we rounded Le Raz de Sein, Dunkerque overtook us on a reach and we had to wait for a real slog into the wind between Pierres Noires and Pierres Vertes to switch to attack mode. We were fast and on the right side of the course, which enabled us to move up to the head of the fleet in fronts of Oman and Ile de France, whilst Dunkerque dropped four places".

With the breeze picking up to a maximum of 22 knots, the eight M34s drew alongside in Camaret at around 2000 hours local time. Sleep will be a priority now in readiness for tomorrow's battle in the two windward-leeward courses: "The rhythm is really nice. We're sailing and that's what we love," concludes Franck Cammas, happy with this victory but all too aware that there's still everything to play for in this Iroise Cup. With just a one-point lead over Courrier Dunkerque thanks to the 2 points awarded for this 72-mile race, the men on Groupama 34 have still got their work cut out, that's for sure...!

Of note on this offshore course was the replacing of Tanguy Cariou (tactician) by Maxime Paul (mainsail trimmer and helmsman), and the switch from Arnaud Jarlégan to Sébastien Marsset.

Ranking in the sixth race of the Iroise Cup (factor 2):
1/ Groupama 34
2/ Team Oman Sail
3/ Ile de France
4/ Dunkerque
5/ Sodebo
6/ Bretagne Crédit Mutuel
with Nantes St Nazaire and Genève following

1/ Groupama 34
2/ Team Oman Sail
3/ Ile de France
4/ Dunkerque
5/ Sodebo
6/ Bretagne Crédit Mutuel
puis suivent Nantes St Nazaire et Genève.
