Such could have been the theme of the sermon this fine Sunday in May. Such was the striking fact of the coastal course for the Grand Prix Guyader. In this particular game, it was Bretagne Crédit Mutuel who took victory ahead of Nantes St Nazaire and Courrier Dunkerque, whilst Groupama 34 ended up in a rare last place.
The day got off to a bad start for Franck Cammas and his crew, who overshot the race start. Quickly turning back, contrary to the Swiss, Groupama managed to get back into the action swiftly. Sixth at the windward mark, the team benefited from an easing wind at the front of the pack to move up to the head of the fleet, whilst Dunkerque and Ile de France lost contact with the group as they stuck to the direct course.
Tacking with the IMOCAs and the Ultimate and 50' multihulls, Groupama 34 rounded the Crozon mark with a comfortable lead. On the long tack which brought the fleet back towards Le Millet headland, the wind played a nasty trick on the leader. The presence of the IMOCAs also caused Cammas to lose the thread in the race, whilst his pursuers managed to sail in a steadier breeze, which enabled them to make the mark on a single tack.
Kicking off the final tack to the finish line in penultimate position, Groupama 34 tried to pull off a daring move by sticking to the coast, whilst his rivals favoured the middle of the bay. These somewhat risky tactics didn't pay off ultimately and the Omanis, who had been just behind Groupama at Le Millet mark, managed to gain three places in the final tack.
As such, today's results are disappointing. However, the Grand Prix Guyader isn't over yet. Tomorrow, Monday, there are three coastal courses in store in a wind, which is set to fill over the course of the day. It's going to be an almighty battle on the water...

Tel aurait pu être le thème du sermon de ce joli dimanche de mai. Tel, en tous les cas, a été le fait marquant du parcours côtier du grand prix Guyader. Et à ce petit jeu, c'est Bretagne Crédit Mutuel qui l'emporte devant Nantes St Nazaire et Courrier Dunkerque alors que Groupama 34 pointe en une rare dernière place.

La journée avait mal débutée pour Franck Cammas et son équipage qui volaient le départ de la manche. Faisant rapidement demi-tour, au contraire des Suisses, Groupama revenait rapidement dans le match. Sixième à la bouée de dégagement, il profitait d'un vent faiblissant par devant pour prendre la tête de la flotte alors que Dunkerque et Ile de France qui restaient sur la route directe perdaient le contact avec la flotte.
Tirant des bords avec les IMOCA et les multicoques Ultimes et 50, Groupama 34 passait la bouée de Crozon avec une confortable avance. Dans le long bord qui ramenait la flotte vers la pointe du Millet, le vent jouait un vilain tour au leader. A cela s'ajoutait la présence des IMOCA qui faisait perdre le fil de la régate à Cammas alors que ses poursuivants naviguaient dans un vent plus soutenu qui leur permettait de rejoindre la marque en ligne directe.
Débutant le dernier bord vers la ligne d'arrivée en avant dernière position, Groupama 34 tentait le tout pour le tout en restant à terre alors que ses concurrents privilégiaient le milieu de la baie. Cette tactique, un brin risquée, s'avérait infructueuse alors que, dans le même temps, les Omanais qui étaient juste derrière Groupama à la bouée du Millet parvenaient à gagner trois places dans le dernier bord.
Le bilan de cette journée est donc décevant. Reste que ce grand prix Guyader n'est pas terminé. Demain lundi sont programmées trois parcours côtiers dans un vent qui devrait se renforcer au fil de la journée. La bagarre sur l'eau s'annonce donc belle...
